Healing on the Sabbath
From chapter one till now, there has been a few occasions where the Pharisees have been using every opportunity to accuse Jesus from breaking any Law. It’s the same when Jesus trying to heal a man with a withered hand during Sabbath. Jesus knew their intention and said this to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” Jesus purposely ask the man to step forward and stretch out his hand to heal him. It’s an aggressive action shown to the Pharisees on purpose. After witnessing all that, the Pharisees immediately went out to the Herodians to plot on how to destroy Jesus.
A Great Multitude Follows Jesus
There are so many people flock in to see Jesus after hearing all the He has done. Jesus told the disciples to prepare a boat for him for an exit in case to many people rushing in and block their way out. The evil spirit cried out Jesus name on purpose so that people will know, but Jesus sternly warn them not to do so.
The Twelve Apostles
Jesus appointed His twelve apostles on the mountain, so that they might be with Him to learn from Him, that Jesus might send them out to preach and to have Power to heal and cast out demons. There are:
1) Peter (given name is Simon)
2) James (son of Zebedee)
3) John (brother of James) – name given by Jesus: Boanerges (Sons of Thunder)
8 ) Thomas
9) James the son of Alphaeus
11) Simon the Cananite
12) Judas Iscariot
A House Divided Cannot Stand
There are such a big crowd coming to Jesus and they are obsessed with the Word of Christ that they have almost forgotten about having meal, by fed by bread alone, Jesus too even though He is having little rest.
People in His hometown thought that He is out of His mind or He is crazy! Jesus has been just a carpenter in His place and rarely known by people. But now He is so famous and preaching through out Galilee, went into the wilderness and claim to be able to heal and forgives people’s sin. I think it’s reasonable for people to think so.
The scribes came down all the way from Jerusalem just to make things more difficult for Jesus. They accuse Jesus using the demoniac power to cast out demon itself. Jesus said to them in parables:
“24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27 No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.”
It was plain that the doctrine of Christ had a direct tendency to break the devil’s power; and it was as plain, that casting of him out of the bodies of people, confirmed that doctrine; therefore Satan could not support such a design. Christ gave an awful warning against speaking such dangerous words. It is true the gospel promises, because Christ has purchased, forgiveness for the greatest sins and sinners; but by this sin, they would oppose the gifts of the Holy Ghost after Christ’s ascension. Such is the enmity of the heart, that unconverted men pretend believers are doing Satan’s work, when sinners are brought to repentance and newness of life.
The Unpardonable Sin
28 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”— 30 because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Send for Him
When His mothers and brothers came looking for Him, He answered and said:” Who is My mother, or My brothers?“
Jesus look back at those sitting in the midst listening to Him and said:” Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.“
Jesus does not disown His own family. He is trying to mean that establishing a relationship with Jesus/God doesn’t confine to just physical or blood related relationship, it involves spiritual relationship.
