” And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and pour it on HIS head.”
But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, ” Why was this fragrant oil wasted?
” For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply. – Mark 14: 3 – 5
The perfume that Mary used to annoint Jesus is a very expensive perfume made from the essence of nard (spikenard) – a special plant that grew only in the Himalayas of India. The perfume cost the equivalent of a whole year’s salary for a laborer in ancient Israel.
Nard symbolizes the sweet aroma worn by a bride, drawing her husband to her. It is believe that the perfume that Mary was using to annoint Jesus was her personal dowry, a treasure she had been keeping for her own wedding. It is perharps her most precious possession.
Despite all the preciousness and how costly it is, Mary doesn’t even hesitate to use it to annoint Jesus.
When is the time that you would serve your best tea, best wine, best steak or whatever best to your guest? It is only when it’s a very important occasion and if only the guest was VVVVIP! Obviously in the case of Mary, Jesus was her First Class VVVVIP!
Do we treat God with the attitude of Mary? Giving our very best to Him? Or we are just taking for granted thinking that He will always be there for us, He is a loving and forgiving God and He will understand?? Most oftenly, we took our closest people in our life for granted, because they are always there and we somehow don’t think that we need to do some thing for them. For example, our family member.
What is God in your life? If you were to rank the 10 most important people in your life, will God be in your list? Is God the priority of your life? Is God your VVVVIP? Or He is just another street passer that happen to bump across your life?
If He is that important to you, what will you be doing for Him? How are you treating Him?
We often try to give our best to every aspect of our life – studies, career, friends, family, social life and etc… But do we give our best to GOD just as how we are doing it for all the other aspect of our life? If you are not, it simply means that God is just not that important as the others and He may be just the one laying right at the bottom of your list.
I’m writting this as a Huge reminder to me as well as i tend to forget easily about that… That without God, my life was made purposeless, That He is the Center of my life, That He is the One who provides reasons and meaning to face tomorrow.
